Why Did You Move to Lanzarote?

This is a very personal Blog, hopefully this will help you understand the attraction of moving to this wonderful island and the daily benefits we enjoy.

When you say your moving to an island, you can be forgiven for thinking about the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ where the sand is white, palm trees sway in the breeze and the crystal clear blue sea beckons you in . However, Lanzarote has a different outlook! Yes, we have white beaches, beautiful blue waters, palm trees and all year-round sunshine but also it has much more to offer than that .

Huge forces from under the surface of the earth caused lava to explode across this once smaller island. The lava which spewed forth from volcanoes of which there were 100 new ones created between 1730 and 1736 * you can follow the events as written by Father Andrés Lorenzo Curbelo from Yaiza who recorded the events in his diary* created Lanzarote. The flow covered 200 Square Kilometres and you can see this from the North across the East and down to the South of the island. Although a long time ago, if you visit the National Park you can see and feel the heat burning in the depths of the Volcano called Timanfaya and even have your dinner cooked there!

This event changed the course of this island and turned it into a hive of scientific activity and even a choice location for film directors over the years. It also made Lanzarote one of the most stunning places to visit. Many compare its likeness to that of the lunar moon surface, drawing people in from all over the world to see and experience this amazing landscape.

The island has such a draw and so much to offer. One of the world’s best endurance races takes place here ‘Iron Man’ which sees top athletes competing for the title and let’s not forget the young ones, who have their own mini version. Health and fitness are common themes as well as numerus water sports. The night life that covers the island offers you some brilliant moments to remember, whether it be a seasonal carnival with its colourful parades, or that unforgettable restaurant offering traditional cuisine!

A question I have been repeatedly asked is why you moved from the from UK, especially with a young family.  Often when you think of England, convenience and security may spring to mind in terms of jobs and housing, but it all comes at a cost and not necessarily a monetary one.

I first moved to Lanzarote in 2000, just before the introduction of the Euro and credit cards, cash was the only currency. Back in the year 2000 the island was very different to how it is now, and our plans didn’t work out, highlighting the need to do your homework before moving and the need to be realistic. We moved back to the UK and Lanzarote became a distant memory, something to talk about, but we never dreamed we would ever take the plunge once again!

In the UK I owned my own company, I started working long hours along with my wife and raced superbikes on the weekends. For a time, life was brilliant, or at least that’s how it appeared, we had the house, cars and the children enrolled in every club going and I indulged myself with bikes, but you can only work and race so much, before life catches up with you and something needs to give. Quickly, our life was becoming difficult and we started to realise we were in a ‘rat race’ and we couldn’t slow down or let things slip.

It was a time to re-evaluate what we wanted out of life. Having four children we decided we wanted family time, dinner time in the sun and we wanted a safe environment for our growing children. We had a great opportunity of getting a house and a job on the island, so for us it was literally a ‘no brainer’!

My family and I moved in August 2018 and we have never looked back. The island gives us time to spend together as a family, we have a good balance of work and play. We enjoy walks across the mountains, coastlines, days at the beach and enjoy the great art and culture which the island has to offer. The sunshine gives you a lift every day, the sea air gives you that vibrant feeling and the sense of community is priceless, especially in this difficult period, it is a real pleasure to see.

I have the privilege of working for Lanzarote Investments, to say I have a new family is an understatement.  I work in a great environment, the view from our Playa Blanca office is amazing, one of which I will never tire, as I help our clients find their dream homes on this magnificent island.  At Lanzarote Investments, I made it my goal to help people discover and enjoy the benefits of this island, just as I have, with my family and offer them real practical advice.

At present, we face a global pandemic and the government of Spain has placed us in Lockdown. The sense of community is amazing, and the conduct of residents is truly refreshing. Our supermarkets are fully stocked, and we are truly being looked after, we are being kept safe.

I feel extremely lucky with moving back to Lanzarote and still feel it was the best move in every way, my goal is to help you find that ‘bit of paradise’ on our island.

At Lanzarote Investments, we can help you find your home and assist for every step of the way.  At present, I am working from home, please do not think we are not thinking about our all buyers and vendors, we have been contacting you all, so please do not hesitate to call me. I am always happy to help. Stay home and keep safe. Paul Beista, Lanzarote Investments p.beista@lanzaroteinvestments.com  (0034 664549074)
